There is a moment that happens in almost every session I photograph.
It is not the one where everyone is lined up and smiling, though I love those too. It is the one just after. When the toddler decides she is done cooperating and starts chasing the dog. When the dad catches the mom's eye and they both laugh, not for the camera, just because. When the older kid wanders off to pick up a rock and the littlest one follows, because that is what little ones do.
That moment. That is the one I am waiting for.
I have been photographing families in Denver and the Colorado foothills for years now, and the longer I do this work, the more certain I am about one thing: the photos that make your breath catch years from now are never the ones where everyone was perfectly still.
They are the in-between ones. The ones you almost missed.
What I Actually Mean When I Say "Storytelling Photography"
I know that phrase gets used a lot. So let me tell you what it means when I say it.
It means I will guide your family into a moment, find the light, get everyone settled and comfortable, and then I step back and let you just be. That is when it happens. The look between you and your partner that you did not plan. The kid who wanders off and the littlest one who follows. The laugh that nobody performed for the camera.
It means we might photograph at your house, where your kids know every hiding spot and the dog is underfoot and the kitchen still has breakfast dishes in the sink. It means we might head somewhere that matters to you, a trail you hike every fall, a park where your youngest learned to ride without training wheels, a stretch of foothills where you go when you need to breathe.
It means I am paying attention to the small things. The way your son reaches for your hand without thinking about it. The look on your daughter's face right before she laughs. The scraped knee that happened on the best bike ride of the summer, worn like a badge of honor.
Those are the stories your family is building right now. Every single day. And most of them are going completely unphotographed.
That is where I come in.
For Families Who Want Something More Traditional
I also know that not every family wants this experience. Some of you want everyone looking at the camera, smiling, in coordinating outfits, with something beautiful enough to go above the mantle. The Christmas card shot.
I hear you. And I have not forgotten you.
I will be offering portrait-focused mini nights specifically for families who want exactly that. A beautiful, efficient session designed to give you the classic images you love. I am still finalizing the dates and details for 2026, and I will send those straight to you when they are ready.
Between these two offerings, I think you will find exactly what you are looking for. I designed it that way on purpose.
Something New I Am So Excited About
Custom sessions this year will also include short video clips woven into your gallery.
Not a produced film. Not a highlight reel. Just small, moving moments of your people. Your kid's giggle. The way your baby grabs your finger. The golden hour light on your family's faces as everyone finally settles in together.
I have been investing in learning this craft because I believe it belongs inside the work I already do. Still images are magic. But there is something about a three-second clip of your toddler belly-laughing that a photograph, as much as I love them, simply cannot hold.
Who I Photograph and Where
I am based in the Denver and Colorado foothills area, and I photograph families all throughout this region. Whether you are in Evergreen, Conifer, Morrison, Pine, Bailey, Littleton, or right in the heart of Denver, I would love to hear from you.
The foothills light is something else entirely. Those long summer evenings when the golden hour stretches forever. The crisp fall afternoons when the aspens are doing what they do and every frame looks like it belongs in a painting. There is nowhere quite like it, and photographing families in this landscape, in the place where they actually live and play, is one of the great privileges of my work.
